The 11 principles of the Naqshbandi Mujaddidi Sufi order, often called the “11 Secrets,” are foundational techniques for maintaining constant divine remembrance (dhikr) while engaging in daily life. Primarily formulated by Abdul Khaliq Ghijduwani and finalized by Shah Baha-ud-Din Naqshband, they focus on guarding the heart and breath.
- Hosh dar Dam (Awareness in the Breath/Moment): Ensuring no breath is exhaled or inhaled in forgetfulness of the Divine.
2. Nazar bar Qadam (Watch Your Step): Maintaining humility and focus on the destination, looking only at one’s feet.
3. Safar dar Watan (Journey in One’s Homeland): An internal journey from blameworthy to praiseworthy characteristics.
4. Khalwat dar Anjuman (Solitude in the Crowd): Being in the company of people while simultaneously experiencing internal, silent solitude with God.
5. Yad Kard (Essential Remembrance): Constantly repeating the Dhikr verbally or mentally.
6. Baz Gasht (Returning/Restraint): Returning to the remembrance of God after each recitation of the Shahada (Tawhid).
7. Nigah Dasht (Attentiveness): Guarding one’s heart from wandering thoughts.
8.. Yad Dasht (Recollection): Maintaining a constant state of awareness of the Divine Presence.
